Garment giant is trapped in "NPE door" and accused of contaminating the body of water

After writing a report six months ago that Adidas, Nike, Li Ning, H & M, and other branded products produced harmful substances in the production process, Greenpeace, the environmental protection organization, recently released the investigation report "Drug of the Fashion," and the spearhead still points to the above-mentioned enterprises. The focus is on these brands. The toxic and harmful substances left on clothing will be released in large quantities during the washing process. The discharge of washing water into rivers, lakes and seas will greatly impair people's health and cause environmental pollution.

In November last year, Li Ning, Adidas and other brands named by Greenpeace had jointly issued a report and expressed their sincere attitude that zero emissions of harmful chemicals would be achieved by 2020. However, according to Li Fang, director of the Greenpeace Pollution Prevention and Control Project, these companies are indeed “going ahead,” but by 2020 there will be a full 8 years and the progress will be too slow.

Nethered Poisonous Water Chain It is understood that the investigation report issued by Greenpeace still targets NPE (Nonylphenol Polyoxyethylene Ether), a poisonous and harmful substance that remains in the production process of many domestic and international brands of clothing, and focuses on converting it into The "chemicals that interfere with the endocrine system" NP (nonyl phenol).

Unlike the report half a year ago, the Greenpeace report was based on the researchers simulating a standard home laundry environment. It tested the washing effects of 14 samples including Adidas, Nike, Li Ning and H&M. A comparative study of the NPE content before and after washing of the product confirms that the pollution caused by the textile industry is not limited to the place of production, but also extends pollution to the place of consumption, resulting in a global circulating chain of toxic and hazardous substances. That is, ordinary consumers will passively discharge these substances into the water system during the daily washing process.

“The NPE endangers humans through two channels. One is through the food chain and the other is through drinking NPE-contaminated water.” When interviewed by a reporter from Southern Capital, Li Fang emphasized that NPE will accumulate in the human body and be very persistent.

This is Greenpeace's third report on the release of residual hazardous substances from well-known apparel brand products. Last year, the organization had issued two related reports, the first of which investigated the emissions of toxic and hazardous substances from the Chinese textile industry. The second article confirmed the products of the 15 well-known clothing brands, including the aforementioned companies. There are NPE residues.

Drug-related companies had stated that they would solve the problem within eight years. In fact, when the second report of Greenpeace was announced in August last year, Li Ning had made it clear that it would publish response measures by the end of that year. Li Ning did not break loose. Three months later, in November 2011, Li Ning’s official website stated in a statement: “Achieving harmful chemical substances in the supply chain and product life cycle through systemic changes after one or a shorter period of time. The goal of zero emissions. Li Ning promises zero emissions of hazardous chemicals by 2020."

In addition, Adidas, H&M, C&A, Nike, and Puma worked together with Li Ning to jointly release the “Joint Roadmap for Zero Emissions of Harmful Chemicals in the Supply Chain System” in November 2011. This roadmap promises to jointly supply Business to communicate the mission of zero emissions of hazardous chemicals; propose the establishment of a list of chemical substances used in garment manufacturing by the end of 2012; and publicly disclose pilot projects and research results. These enterprises also disclosed the contact details of the specific responsible departments and put forward a positive attitude of “welcome supervision”.

Regarding the attitude of these companies, Li Fang affirmed. According to her, after the first report was publicized last year, Greenpeace and the companies involved had communication, including companies such as Hummer, Nike and Li Ning. All of them responded. Through repeated processes, these enterprises have set up several projects. One of the surveys includes investigating the source and scope of application of N PE. She also pointed out in particular that Li Ning’s statement was at least a “step-by-step” step in the management of toxic and hazardous chemicals in products.

8 years too long, detoxification should be "only for the day"

However, in the eyes of Li, this is still far from enough. She first pointed out Li Ning's list of harmful substances. "For most of the substances, the control is only copying the legal provisions, and there is still a long way to go before the complete elimination of these toxic and hazardous substances in the supply chain and products."

In addition, she thinks that the movements are too slow for the “zero emissions of harmful chemicals in 2020” proposed by these companies. “If according to the current situation, the pollution of rivers and lakes in China by 2020 will be very serious. The old roads that will be contaminated first and then remedied will prove to be a huge economic cost in any country.” Li specifically mentioned for more than 40 years. The former "Heavy metal pollution in Japan," even after spending more than 8,000 billion yen to rectify the situation, the "wounding pain" caused by the pollution still lingers.

As for the adoption of N PE is a common feature of China's garment manufacturing industry, or only the big brands mentioned in the report will be used. Li Fang replied that in the past, Greenpeace had conducted investigations for some non-well-known companies and later turned to well-known enterprises. The purpose was to hope that the high degree of concern of these enterprises could lead to more people's attention, and they hoped that they could play an exemplary role. .

It is reported that NPE is not irreplaceable as a printing and dyeing auxiliary. Europe and the United States began to use alternatives more than ten years ago. As a result, does Li Ning and other companies really need to spend 8 years to “solve” these harmful substances? Or 2020 is just a matter of time. In this regard, Nandu reporter tried to contact Li Ning Public Relations Department, but until the press release, the relevant person in charge of the phone has always been in the state of no answer.

The point of view NPE does not directly harm the health of the wearer Adidas' written reply to the Southern Reporter said: Greenpeace reported that "there is no evidence that NPE found in clothing directly harms the wearer's Health.” All our products are tested by internationally renowned testing organizations. Our products sold worldwide are safe and comply with all regulations and laws.

Since 1998, we have started implementing the “Restriction of Hazardous Substances Policy”, which clearly targets the improvement of our supply chain's impact on the environment. The test results released by Greenpeace show that our NPE concentration is far below the target value, which proves that the policy we implemented is effective. For more than 15 years, we have continuously reduced the use of hazardous chemicals and will continue to reduce the use of hazardous chemicals in the supply chain system.

A joint road map linking zero emissions of hazardous chemicals in the supply chain system (introduced by Adidas, H&M, C&A, Nike, and Hummer, Li Ning)

The road map promises to communicate to all suppliers the mission of zero emissions of hazardous chemicals; it proposes to establish a list of chemical substances used in garment manufacturing by the end of 2012; publicly disclose pilot projects and research results. These companies also disclosed the contact details of the specific responsible department.
