Pearl overview and history

Pearl is one of the organic gemstones and the only gemstone in the world that grows in the body. Its main chemical components are CaCO3 (calcite), a small amount of inorganic matter and water. The latest science and investigations believe that the earliest pearls on the earth appeared in ancient times 200 million years ago. So early in the early days of mankind, this gleaming gem was discovered when primitive people searched for food along the coast and river. Pearl has always been favored by humans, and today it is still the most precious wealth of mankind.

The beauty of pearls lies in the brilliance of their unfinished processing, and the ever-changing shape of pearls gives the pearl jewellery a unique artistic temperament, inspiring the jewellery designers to enrich their imagination and create a piece of jewelry.

The treasure of pearl has been found in a variety of mollusks. The common production of seawater pearls is the oyster named Pinctada. Western countries believe that pearl-containing oysters are inedible. In fact, pearls are not found in the oysters we eat. The main source of freshwater pearls is mussels or oysters of the genus Amaranthus compared to oysters that are mainly produced from seawater pearls. Most of the species of the genus Pearl, which produces pearls, can be found in rivers in many parts of the world.

As for the formation of pearls, our ancestors have had some very fascinating theories. For example, the early history stated that when a drop of dew fell into the sea, it was just followed by an open oyster, thus forming a pearl. If the weather is good, a beautiful pearl can be formed, and if the weather is bad, the dew will become a black and faint pearl. By the 17th century, scientists had said that the formation of pearls was a function of sand entering the oyster shell, and another claim that pearls were undischarged eggs in oysters. The actual formation of pearls was finally confirmed in the 20th century.

In addition to our common pearls, there are some pearl-like substances found in many mollusks and other invertebrates. Although they are also calcium solidified bodies, there is very little pearl luster. The brilliance of the nacre in the pearl of the pearl. The calcareous solidified body in edible sea bream looks like a cherry kernel, which is neither dull nor valuable. Abalone can produce pearlescent pearls, which usually have bright colors, but most are deformed. Shell mollusk occasionally may produce a solidified body that can be used in gem foods. This solidified body is not as typical as pearls, has no nacre, but has a lovely pink color.
